Defective TiresSteel-belted radial automobile tires have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of a minority that have a dangerous tendency to fall apart in use. Several brands of tire have been recalled because their tread separates -- peels off the tire -- due to design or manufacturing defects. If this happens while the vehicle is in use, the tire may blow out, or just become hard to control. Either way, tread separation can cause the driver to lose control of his or her vehicle, swerve into other lanes and end up in a serious accident. The result for the innocent driver, passengers and the motorists around them can be death, brain injuries, paralysis, amputation, permanent disability and severe property damage. In one of the most famous tire tread separation cases, almost seven million Bridgestone/Firestone tires were recalled in 2000 and 2001 after hundreds of lawsuits were filed alleging that the Bridgestone/Firestone tires included on brand-new Ford vehicles were defective and prone to cause tread-separation accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says at least 271 deaths and 800 injuries can be traced directly to these tires -- which were not recalled until several years after the lawsuits began. Tread separation is also thought by some to cause rollover crashes, in which the vehicle flips over. The NHTSA reports that rollover accidents are one of the most dangerous types of auto accident, because they throw occupants violently around the vehicle, increasing the chance of a serious brain injury. Sport-utility vehicles, 15-passenger vans and other autos with a high center of gravity are especially vulnerable to rollover accidents. Tire and auto manufacturers have a legal duty to offer vehicles for sale that are safe and free of defects that might kill or seriously harm consumers. If you or someone you love has been involved in such an accident due to a defective tire, you have the right to hold manufacturers legally liable for your physical, psychological and financial injuries.
