Are You Using Social Media to Generate Referrals?

Social media has created a buzz in the world of law firm marketing--with attorneys and firms on both sides of the fence wondering whether or not it is a worthwhile practice.

On one hand, it can be confusing and often demands quite a bit of valuable time with no easy way to measure the results. On the other hand, it increases exposure and develops new relationships that would have otherwise never existed.

So is it worth it? The answer is yes...but only if you're engaging your target audience and providing value on a regular basis.

Here's a foolproof strategy for using social media sites--such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter--to generate referrals for your law firm:

  1. Create personal and business profiles on major social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
  2. Fill your online networks with people you have already established trust-based relationships with. Not many people already like somebody they don't know--so don't waste your time or energy by spamming complete strangers with friend or follow requests.
  3. Be genuinely interested in your friends and followers--building relationships that extend beyond business. Comment on their updates, respond to their tweets, and make yourself a visible part of their online world.
  4. Offer incredible value to your friends and followers--turn them into enthusiastic fans. A few ways to do this include offering personalized advice, linking to relevant content, and posting exclusive offers.
  5. The more you nurture your online relationships and develop a network of contacts - the more comfortable others will feel to refer you and your services to people in their networks.

Imagine for a moment that you have 300 contacts spread between Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. If each of your 300 contacts knows 30 people that may be interested in your legal services, you could rapidly build your network to 9000 people through social media. Compare this to traditional marketing methods - where it would take a considerable amount of time or money (or both) to reach 9000 people in a truly positive way.

It makes sense, right?

If you're ready to prepare your law firm for social media success, start building your online networks today!

Marketing Joke: "Dismal Season"

An interoffice softball game was held every year between the Marketing Department and Legal Department of one law firm.

The day for the game came, and hard as the Marketers tried, the Legal Department whipped the Marketing Department soundly.

In their best tradition, the Marketing Department decided to find the best 'spin' they could on the dismal result. They showed how they earn their keep by posting this memo on the blog after the game:

"The Marketing Department is pleased to announce that for the recently-completed Softball Season, we came in 2nd place, having lost but one game all year.

The Legal Department, however, had a rather dismal season, as they won only one game all year."
