Air Bag Injuries

Originally invented as a crash safety device, airbags have been required in some form in consumer vehicles since 1994. In a crash, an air bag hidden in your car’s interior is meant to inflate suddenly and provide a soft cushion of air for passengers to land on. Unfortunately, not all air bags serve to protect drivers and passengers. When airbags are defective or malfunction, they can cause severe head injuries, chemical burns, eye damage or even death.

There are three major ways in which an airbag is likely to be defective:

  • The airbag fails to deploy in an accident. This can happen with brand-new airbags or with airbags that had deployed before, but were not or could not be replaced and reinstalled properly.
  • The airbag suddenly activates because of a minor bump in the road, or for no apparent reason at all.
  • The gas used to inflate the airbag in a crash isn’t filtered properly, causing dangerous chemicals to escape and burn the passengers the airbag is supposed to protect, often on the face.

Such chemical burns are one type of severe injury that can be caused by an airbag. Another is injury from the bag itself. Airbags may be meant as a cushion, but those who have experienced it say that crashing into one is a little like being smacked hard in the face. For children and smaller adults without enough height to raise their faces above the air bag, that “smack” can result in broken bones, eye injuries, traumatic brain injury or even death. That’s why all cars with airbags have a legal duty to carry warnings.

When airbags deploy unnecessarily, they may be responsible for causing the accident in the first place, because they can distract, disorient or knock out the driver. And when airbags fail to deploy at all, they deprive the driver and passengers of the crash protection they are supposed to provide -- exposing them to more serious injuries than they would have sustained otherwise.
